We grabbed the last booth at the Crabby Clam Café. It was Red Beans and Rice day, one of my favorite daily specials.

“Sharon, do you miss waitressing?”

“I miss talking to everyone, but I don’t miss the long days on my feet. It’s not an easy job.”

We put in our orders and eavesdropped on the conversations around us. If we were taking a poll, it looked like everyone here agreed. Max murdered his brother. It seemed as if we were all swirling around the same idea but the “why” was what confused us. And without any hard evidence, there was no way to prove it.

“Did anyone else hear Mildred in the salon? Doris leaned in as we waited for our food. “She said Max had a girlfriend. I didn’t know this.”

I nodded. “I heard her too. I wonder if the girlfriend knows anything about what happened. Didn’t the bartender say something about Max and Marco arguing about money? Maybe Marco was upset because he was spending money on his girlfriend?”

“According to Max, they were arguing about the money that Marco owed him on the rent.”

“Yes, that is what he said. None of it makes sense. I feel like we’re in the eye of a storm, but we just can’t see through it.” Margie sighed. “And I thought those boys were so nice. But if they’re involved in this, I was singing to the wrong melody.”

The waitress arrived with our plates and set the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp in front of Rosemary and Doris. The succulent prawns were bursting from either side of the browned-to-perfection bacon. The brown sugar and honey from the barbecue sauce drizzled over them made my mouth water with regret that I hadn't ordered it myself.

“We need to get our facts in order.” Rosemary licked her fingers before taking a drink. “Do we have two crimes or one? I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Marco is dead. I just don’t know how this is all connected. This whole case has me more flustered than my first kiss with Bobby Shubert behind my daddy’s shed.”

“I’m with you, Rose…not that I kissed Bobby, but if we tried connecting the dots on this one on our board, we’d end up with one giant ball of tangled string.” Patty Sue laughed.

“And I still wonder who led us to the plumbers in the first place? Who is the mysterious ‘J’?” Doris asked between bites of her shrimp.

They both had valid points, which led to an unsettling predicament—we had a bunch of information with no way to piece it together.
